A Letter to My Dogs

I saw this just today on Craigslist. While funny I think it does express a familiar frustration we sometimes have with our pets (yes even cats can have this same effect.)

And this is a perfect reason that sometimes you need pet sitters like ourselves to help you pet lovers out every once and while.

I hope you like this article. Enjoy.

Dear Dogs,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions with each other so there are still two dogs in the way.

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn’t help, because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing but doggy sarcasm.

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. In addition, I have been using bathrooms for years, canine attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dogs butt. I cannot stress this enough. It would be such a simple change for you.

Sincerely,
Your Overwhelmed Owner

9 Great Reasons to adopt from your local shelter

I read this in a Good Housekeeping magazine and thought I would share.

1. Shelter dogs are GOOD dogs. The myth that a dog is in a shelter because he’s bad is just that — a myth. Death, divorce and disaster are just a few of the reasons that dogs find themselves in a shelter. The dogs that I work with who’ve come out of shelters are some of the most grateful and devoted dogs that I’ve met.

2. A dog wants to BOND to someone. So even though the shelter dog you’re considering has had a previous owner, he will still want to — and NEED to — bond to a new, loving owner or family.

3. Shelters can guide you in your decision. A shelter has people who can steer you toward the dog of your dreams and away from a dog that wouldn’t be appropriate for you. So bring a wish list of what you want in a dog, stick to it and listen to the adoption counselors.

4. There’s a dog for everyone. And chances are, that dog is in a shelter right now, waiting for you. Before you go, make a wish list of what you want in a dog — size, coat type, energy level. Lots of shelters have online pictures and description of their current adoptable dogs, too. If you don’t find the dog that you want the day you visit the shelter, don’t worry, because….

5. New dogs arrive everyday. If you don’t find the dog you are looking for the first tine, don’t worry! In a few days, new dogs will be at the shelter for you to choose from. In addition, most shelters keep a request list, and you can ask them to call you when they get a “_____” type/size/allergenic-level dog.

6. You can beat the housebreaking routine. Although you will have to teach your new dog where the bathroom is [Second tree to the left!], a healthy dog will naturally acquire housebreaking expertise in a few days or less.

7. The puppy stuff is behind you. Here’s a sample of puppy life: Go to the bathroom, eat, go to the bathroom, play, go to the bathroom, chew on the couch, go to the bathroom, sleep, go to the bathroom, repeat. And that’s just the first half of the day! If you don’t have 24/7 to devote to a puppy in the first six months of his life, you’re better off with an adult dog.

8. Adult dogs are who they are. Unlike a puppy, who will go through many stages before he’s matured, an adult dog has already formed his core personality, so what you see is what you get. A friendly, personable dog in a shelter is usually a friendly, personable dog outside the shelter.

9. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks. It doesn’t matter what the age of the dog is. With a positive approach, you can teach your new best friend obedience basics, fun tricks and even a dog with sports agility.

Tips For Keeping Your Dog’s Coat Shinny

Here is a great article about how to keep your dogs coat shinny. I hope you like it.

Tricks For Keeping Your Dog’s Coat Shiny

To a pet lover there is nothing more beautiful than a dog with a magnificent shiny coat. We admire those creatures and wonder what those dog owners know that we don’t know. We speculate about what we could do differently to improve our dog’s coat.

First of all, it’s important to know that a shiny coat, as beautiful as it is, is much more about being healthy than it is about beauty. But in this case, as in many others, health and beauty seem to go hand in hand. Your dog’s coat will not look its best if his health is suffering.

In essence there are five things you can provide or do to contribute to your dog’s beautiful coat:

· Good Nutrition

· Keep Him Parasite-Free

· Use A Good Conditioner

· Buy Him His Own Shampoo

· Brush Regularly

Being a responsible dog owner means providing proper nutrition for your pet. And believe it or not, just because you pay a lot for a dog food does not always mean your dog is getting everything he needs in his diet. Check with your veterinarian about your pet’s specific needs and learn to read the labels on the pet food products you purchase. Compare the ingredients from one product to another.

If you feed your pet home-cooked foods you may need to add a quality supplement to insure that he is getting all the vitamins and minerals necessary. Your veterinarian can guide you in making wise decisions about a supplement choice.

Most dogs end up getting at least some fleas during their lifetime. It’s up to the owner to see that this problem never becomes an infestation. Some dogs are more sensitive than others to fleas and flea bites. These dogs are likely to bite at themselves, sometimes to the point of developing sores or even losing hair, in the areas where the fleas are or have bitten the dog.

Routine fur and skin checks can keep a problem from developing. Some dog owners prefer to use flea prevention medications year round so they never have to deal with the problem at all.

While we all agree that dogs do not need to bathe as regularly as humans there is some disagreement about just how often is right for our pets. In general, dogs should not be bathed more often than once per week unless there are special circumstances. But of course, some breeds need to be bathed more often than others simply because of their lifestyle.

Additionally, dog fur is not exactly like human hair so it should not be treated the same way. Specially formulated shampoos and conditioners will work to make the dog’s coat shiny and help to keep it tangle free which makes it easier to brush. Another important point is that while these products are strong enough to be effective, they are gentle to your pet’s skin and his eyes, if you should accidently get the product in them.

The last thing I want to mention is probably the most basic and the most obvious. Brushing your dog’s hair will help distribute natural oils and help remove dander and loose fur. The result will be a shinier and healthier looking coat. Every dog should be brushed at least once or twice a week, but some breeds, such as a Shih Tzu, should be brushed daily.

Constancy is one of the most important concerns to take into account when you are transferring with your animals. Majority of pets rely on having specific things everyday. For instance, dogs count on walks that happen at a uniform time daily, cats love to be fed at specific times, horses need daily exercise, and different pets require hygienic cages and more. It is essential to keep as many of these customs ready when you are transferring in order to keep the animals from being disturbed too much.

No matter if you are transporting your pet, or if you hire a company to do so, you need to ensure that concerns are established so that your pet can travel at ease. This signifies that you should have food or drugs that they will need during the move handy and not difficult to get to. Consider packing a travel bag or box for your pets. Include items such as favorite toys, special treats, blankets, foods, drugs, additional collars and leashes, and everything else your pet employs or needs on a daily basis. Attempt not to wash their toys or blankets when you move, as the smell will play a great part in keeping them comfortable during the move and when you move into your current home.
